Title Director, Office of ALA Governance

Description ALA is seeking a director for our Office of ALA Governance that will ensure the smooth and accurate operation of the governance functions of the association, including, but not limited to, the Council, Executive Board meeting, annual elections, presidential activities and training of newly-elected Board members and officers. Will provide prompt and efficient communications via governance-related press releases, handbooks, web pages and electronic discussion lists working with two direct reports to assure the success of Council and Executive Board meetings.

As part of the ALA Executive Office, the Office of ALA Governance mission is to provide support to and facilitate the work of the Association and all its members; and specifically offer direct service and assistance to the ALA President, President-Elect, the ALA Executive Board, the ALA Council and the ALA Executive Director.

In addition, the Office of ALA Governance maintains files on the work of the ALA Immediate Past President and other ALA Past Presidents of the Association.

Reporting to the ALA Executive Director, the Director, Office of ALA Governance is responsible for:

 Supervising/developing/mentoring the Council Secretariat and Program Officer
 Serving as Executive Board Secretariat
 Serving as staff liaison to Nominating Committee for the ALA Elections
 Coordinating and overseeing association-wide elections
 Assisting Executive Director as necessary
 Acting as the liaison to President/President-elect
 Preparing and monitoring budgets for the Executive Board, President and President-Elect, ALA Council, Governance and Executive Offices, and special projects and grants
 Working with other ALA units, to plan and implement major programs at ALA Conferences, including the President’s Programs, Opening General Session, and inaugural luncheon
 Designing and coordinating comprehensive two-day training and orientation programs for the newly elected ALA President-elect, Treasurer and Board members. Provide continuous coaching and advice throughout the year
 Staff Liaison to Constitution & Bylaws Committee

There is approximately 20% travel for this position, both regionally and nationally.

Starting Salary: Negotiable from $85,000 based on experience. ALA offers a comprehensive and valuable benefits package that includes generous paid vacation and retirement annuity.

Requirements
Desired Experience:

 Prior association and/or parliamentary experience preferred; experience with governance and association executives/elected leaders
 Strong written and oral communication skills
 Experience developing and mentoring staff
 Experience working in an association
 Project management experience

Required Education and Experience

 Bachelor’s degree in business administration or equivalent experience; Graduate degree preferred
 Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in a complex, member service and business-focused organization.
 Minimum 3 years supervisory experience
