Description American Libraries, the flagship magazine of the American Library Association, seeks a managing editor to join its editorial team to help produce a bimonthly membership magazine, the American Libraries website, the Dewey Decibel podcast, the American Libraries Direct e-newsletter, and other media products.

Reporting to the Editor and Publisher, the Managing Editor is responsible for:

• Timely, stellar, and cost-controlled production of the magazine and digital products.

• Managing workflow, ensuring deadlines are met.

• Overseeing the adherence to house style.

• Rigorously assessing editorial performance and managing standards of excellence.

• Collaborating on long-term editorial and business planning.

• Developing story ideas and assigning and editing high-quality content, working with freelancers and cultivating and recruiting a diverse writing pool.

• Writing news and event coverage.

• Managing junior editors and the summer intern program.

Salary:

Negotiable from the mid-50s; based on experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes generous paid vacation and a retirement annuity.

Requirements • Successful candidates will have a minimum of 5 years of related experience in nonprofit or consumer media, with a minimum of 2 to 3 years of managerial experience.
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications-related field required.
• Excellent editing, writing/reporting, communication, and organizational skills.
• Track record of meeting and enforcing deadlines, including creating effective workflows.
• Strong attention to detail.
• A commitment to journalistic standards and ethics.
• Proven project and workflow management skills.
• Outstanding news judgment and a demonstrated ability to execute a story from pitch to publication.
• Proven ability to work effectively and collaboratively on a small editorial team as well as with a wide range of colleagues.
• Previous work on magazines preferred.
• Fluency with analytics and their application preferred.
• Familiarity with the library profession and community a plus.
• Some travel for professional conferences required.
